Introduction to Webquest
Last week I watched Jamie Oliver's School Dinners on TV. Many of you work with or have children.
This web-quest is about exploring the links between food and health, summarising arguments,
and also asks questions about how reliable what we find on the internet may be.
Webquest Tasks
Task 1
You will write a short report on what you have found out about the effects of diet on health.
Task 2
You will summarise a passage of text http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2356163.stm
Task 3
You will write a short report on weighing up how to decide whether web sites are reliable.
Webquest Process
First read this quote:
Jamie was asked, What have you learned from doing the series?
One of the most shocking things that I just hadn't realised was how much food is taken on the go, it's not there to be shared or enjoyed. A lot of kids don't even have a table at home, they just take their food and go upstairs and eat it in front of their PlayStations. I mean, I like a bowl of noodles in front of the telly with the missis all right, but it's also great to share meals with others, and sometimes it's fantastic for the family to sit down and eat together.
The other really important thing is making people understand. People say: 'My kid eats this or that junk food, and he's all right.' They don't realise what the long-term effect's gonna be. It takes a doctor or paediatrician to say to them, your kid's storing up this that or the other health problem. The information's all there: the statistics show that we're growing more obese, getting more diseases linked with poor diet. We should be saying, f--- it, what are we doing? If we don't act now, in 100 years what will people think they'll look back and see, all the signs were there and they'll say why didn't they do anything."
Secondly, visit some of the resource websites, remember to make notes, keep the TASKS in mind.
Thirdly, open Word, create a new document, save it as food. IMPORTANT Make sure it gets saved onto a floppy disk before the end of the session.
Write up tasks 1, 2 and 3.
Proofread your answers, for spelling, punctuation and meaning.
